New changes go into effect at block: 20290
Our beloved Catcoin is sick...But we're taking it to the vet to save it!
Due to a number of mitigating circumstances and a serious flaw in the original design of the coin, it has become obvious that we must immediately update our coin and client in order to save it. At the current hash rate it will take over four months to reach our next difficulty retarget, and we will likely not maintain the hash rate necessary to achieve that goal. Currently, Block times that should take only ten minutes are taking over two hours due to the lack of hash rate and excessive difficulty. We as a community have decided to address these issues by updating the difficulty retarget time to address these concerns. This will cause us to require a new wallet client and will ultimately cause what is known as a hard fork in the blockchain. This is not a bad thing! This will save our coin and give it its absolute best chance of survival! This, for all intents and purposes, is an EMERGENCY UPDATE.
When will This Happen?
We're planning the re-launch of Catcoin for 8PM EST, Saturday January 4th, 2014. Yes, we're releasing on Caturday!
Why did this happen?
Due to the success of Catcoin at launch, the high initial hashrate pushed the difficulty of catcoin to unsustainable and unprofitable levels. This caused the hashrate to leave Catcoin for other coins, and leave us with the excessively long difficulty retarget time we're currently experiencing, which is absolutely unsustainable.
There is hope! By hardforking the coin we will restore life to our sick kitty and allow the difficulty to return to normal levels. Once again, this will make the coin profitable to mine, and allowing transactions to resume being confirmed in a much more timely and appropriate manner.
How will this affect my coins?
It won't. Any coins that were mined before the fork will appear as if nothing happened. You will be required to update your wallet to a new version that has the new changes, but other than that all coins that are already mined will be maintained.
How will the pools be affected?
The majority of the pools have agreed to these changes already and have offered to update their nodes and blockchain to support the changes. These changes will largely appear seamless to you as the end user. Just continue mining and enjoy the reduced difficulty!
What changes are being made to the client?
Fortunately, very few! We're changing the number of blocks between difficulty from 2016 blocks, to 36 (roughly 6 hours). We are leaving all other facets of Catcoin intact to preserve its current form as much as possible.
Will this happen again?
If we were simply to lower the network difficulty, the possibility exists that a large spike in network hash could drive the difficulty back up to these unsustainable levels again. By making this update, we are preventing the need for any further forks due to difficulty, and protecting out beloved cats!
Long live Catcoin!
